Computers, Devices and Applications

This is part of a series describing some of our common boat systems and their operation.

We refer to these often not only for our own use, but also when asked specific questions about systems on Denali Rose, and when participating in discussions on various forums.


We aren't implying our choices are the best or only way to go; they just happen to be the decisions we made about what works best for us...
It is worth noting that most of the software [i.e., applications, or programs] we mention, below, is also available for many other devices and operating systems...
And since we are talking about electronics, in the future our choices described on this page may become dated and/or obsolete. Therefore, we will attempt to keep this information current regarding what we have and use, and what we are researching/considering for the future. Check back often as this page will change over time...

And please leave a comment if you spot an error or omission, or have recommendations based upon your own first-hand experience.


Computers: This page is now out of date! See the most recent version.]

We are retired management professionals. Therefore we are lazy and prefer to avoid having to do too much [or know too much...] to keep our computers functioning well. We therefore use Apple Macintosh computers and its Unix based operating system. [OSX] 


We also run Windows on our Macs for any programs we need to use that require that OS. [None at present; May-2016]. Also, it surprises many that Windows runs faster on our Mac Powerbooks than on most dedicated Windows machines... This we constantly rediscover whenever booting/running Windows while sitting next to someone with a powerful, dedicated Windows computer...]


We like portability, so we use laptops. We each have a personal one, and we keep our prior generation models as back-ups. All are kept up-to-date, synchronized, and immediately available for use.


Our philosophy is that all of these electronic devices and gadgets- even though they are expensive- are disposable devices... [I know. That hurts, doesn't it? But think about that for a moment...]


Therefore we use them until they no longer work or perform well enough to do the job at hand. Then we replace them with current models. [Cry once...] Transfer everything over, and try to keep going...


Computer Software: [A select few of the many Applications (Programs) we rely upon...]

  • Navigation:
    • OpenCPN [Navigation and route planning; integrated with our N2K network.]
      • GPS [and GLONASS] source is NMEA data on our wireless network
  • Documents, Books, Manuals, etc.: 
    • Google Drive [for the Ship's library documents. 20GB and growing... All manuals, technical books, documents, etc.]
      • Install Drive sync software on your computer
      • Keeps a copy on our computer(s) so we always have access to everything
      • Syncs to the cloud whenever we have internet access via WiFi or Cell data connection so we have permanent back-up accessible from anywhere in the world from any computer
    • Google Docs, [Spread] Sheets, etc. [for all spreadsheets, documents, etc.]
      • Works offline, and syncs whenever we have an internet connection
      • Excellent for collaborative efforts
    • Google Calendar
      • Works offline, and syncs whenever we have an internet connection
      • Syncs with the calendar on our phones and tablets
      • Great for sharing specific calendar(s) with specific individual(s)
  • eMail and document transfer:
    • Gmail [for personal and boat email when WiFi or cell data are available.]
    • UUplus email [and document retrieval service e.g., Weather, news, etc.]
      • Also works via any internet connection including Sat phone, WiFi, Cell, etc.
        • i.e., Is not limited to sat phone only unlike the Iridium GO! email app.
      • Optimized for Iridium Sat phones; works on the GO!

Since we like the Macintosh computers, we have iPad Tablets. [iOS is the operating system that runs on iPhones and iPads]

We each have our own model of choice, and a third dedicated to ship's systems. [And like our computers, our old (still functioning) tablets will be kept as back-ups (and dedicated picture/slide show kiosks) as they are replaced in the future...]


We buy iPads with cell data capability [i.e., not WiFi only...] so they have a built-in GPS [part of the cell chip...] and can be used as back-up navigation devices or hot spots if we lost use of our smart phones.

Some of the important Applications/Programs we rely upon are listed, below. There are many more. These just happen to be the ones we find ourselves using most often among hundreds of apps on our devices... [>200 in May-2016, and counting...]

  • Navigation:
    • Sea IQ Open [Recreational version]
    • Garmin BlueChart Mobile [Great for route planning, tracking and user friendly enough for guests to use and follow-along without interfering with the primary navigation systems...]
    • Skipper [The only app we have found that combines charts and Topographic land maps. This is very useful where we currently travel...]

    • Commander Compass [Hand-held compass on steroids]
    • Theodolite [A multi-function augmented reality app that combines a compass, GPS, map, photo/movie camera, rangefinder, and two-axis inclinometer into one indispensable app. Theodolite overlays real time information about position, altitude, bearing, range, and inclination on the iPhone’s live camera image, like an electronic viewfinder. Way cool...]

      You guessed it; we like and use Apple iPhones. [iOS is the operating system that runs on iPhones and iPads]

      We also keep our older phones that have been replaced over the years, and unlock them so we can use them internationally with SIM cards we purchase as we travel...


      We have a great cell data plan on our smartphones, so one is typically used as a hotspot device [using a cell booster to maximize the signal strength and distance] that is broadcast to all devices on the boat using our WiriePro [See Networking, below...]


      Comparison shop smartphones and plans. 


      SmartPhone Software: [See Tablet Software, immediately above, because most iOS apps run on both devices.]




      Printer [and Scanner/ Copier]:

      We wanted a compact printer [B&W and Color], scanner, and copier all-in-one as those are the functions we need traveling internationally.


      We ended up with an HP Envy Printer and couldn't be more pleased. It is compact, wireless, and works first time every time... And the expendables are reasonably priced. At under US$100 it is hard to beat.


      One thing we have learned over the years [regardless of which printer you have] is to use heavier weight paper [e.g, 24 pound stock instead of the usual flimsy 20 lb stock] for printed documents you will be providing others [e.g., foreign government representatives, etc.] It holds up better while you are transporting it in your shoulder bag, and feels good in the hand of the recipient. [Like letterhead stock does...]




      FAX: [Facsimile]

      For transmitting and receiving faxes, we use the HelloFAX service in a browser on the computer. [We need internet connectivity to send/receive a FAX...]


      HelloFAX is an online service we use on the rare occasion when we need to transmit [or receive] a FAX. Sending is free; receiving requires a small monthly fee, and is something we rarely need to do...


      Since we keep scanned copies of all our ship's papers, passports, etc. on our local computers, it is quick to print and/or FAX copies quickly, as needed. [e.g., When checking into foreign countries, applying for permits, etc.]




      Networking: [Connecting it all together...]

        Wired: 

      • We have both a NMEA 2000 [N2K] and a proprietary ethernet network [B&G] our computers can be physically connected to. However, we typically rely on a wireless connection as outlined below.
        Wireless: [WiFi or Cell Data for internet access]
      • WiriePro

      AIS: where we stand...

      For those still reading, here's the point. This is the single most important contribution to maritime safety since the advent of electronic positioning. We also embrace the KISS principal on board (the sailboat, not the trawler), but this system has a place on any boat venturing out in any area where shipping traffic is present, coastal or offshore. I read about and remember well the difficulties posed by commercial traffic in various ports, and these units just take so much of that away.

      I don't know what compelled me to write this today. It probably has something to do with Shell's new arctic oil rig pulling into Dutch last night with 5 attending tugs and so many damn lights that I appreciated the technology anew.

      We agree. AIS is the best aid to navigation released in many years. We love our Vesper Watchmate 850 integrated with our chart plotter and VHF radios [both of which also have AIS Rx only functions for back-up...]

      The anchor watch functions are unbeatable. {Having said that, a feature request would be the ability to adjust the anchor coordinates instead of having to punch the mark button at precisely the right moment... This is an issue for us because the Vesper is in our pilothouse, and we typically conduct anchoring from the cockpit helm. Running down the companionway during anchoring to press the button isn't always doable, or timely...}

      We went so far as to rely on AIS for POB alert and retrieval function integrating an AIS transmitter with GPS into our inflatable PFD/harnesses. [Side note: When we replace these, we will go with the fairly new AIS/VHF DSC versions to get even more alarm options...]

      I also note with interest Ben Ellison's [Panbo] recent article about 5 Watt SOTDMA Class B AIS transceiver [up from the current 2 watt Class B limit we currently enjoy...]

      AIS: don't leave home [port] without it!

      Agreed. Radar is typically a must for us in our current cruising waters. 

      We constantly remind ourselves that all of these electronics are simply AIDs to navigation... and the more the better for us [depth, charts, chart plotters, GPS, AIS, RADAR, binoculars, spot lights, etc...]  And lets not forget the days of  recreational SAT NAV, RDF and LORAN-C...

      I have never found any single AID that accommodates every situation- including my own eyes and assessment. 

      Situational awareness conspires to keep me humble...

      Ken,

      We inherited a Vesper Watchmate 850 with our boat. [The model before the Vision: No WiFi or touchscreen, and monotone as well...]

      It is a very reliable, feature rich unit with excellent filtering and very low power requirements. It is connected to the primary VHF masthead antenna using a Vesper splitter. [An excellent device from our experience...]

      The anchor alarm has earned its place as our primary one. [3 others are set also- along with a RADAR perimeter...] As I have mentioned in prior posts re: AIS, our AIS is broadcasting all the time- even at anchor- but that is due to the areas we currently cruise. [Our SOP may change in other locations in the future...]

      Since our person overboard [POB] alert devices are PFD mounted AIS transmitters [with GPS] we also installed a VHF with AIS Rx only [for AIS Rx redundancy.] Both AIS sources are fed to our N2K network so our MFD is our primary AIS Target screen [We can select which AIS source to use...] We added a GoFree WiFi1 device to our N2K network, so AIS data is available to all N2K and WiFi devices. [Like you will be able to do with a Vision.]

      Since we rely on AIS to alert onboard crew of a POB, we want to make sure the alarm is loud enough to be heard. The Watchmate 850 has a provision [and likely other AIS models as well...] to easily wire in an external alarm, which we did [with it's own on/off switch for muting...] We even wired in another switch to additionally activate our airhorns. [All can be muted in an instant... This is very important as you cannot talk over either alarm...]

      Therefore, [for us...] being able to activate external alarm(s) of choice is an important feature of AIS. That is a requirement I am keeping on my list for future AIS replacements.

      Siren Marine Boat Monitoring System [Updated Dec-2020]

      Preface to the subject post [below]:


      We first went live with Siren Marine in 2014 with their original 2G monitoring device. But 2G cell service was depricated nearly worldwide by 2017, so our original device is no longer working... 

      In late 2017 Siren Marine launched the next generation of their boat monitoring system. Their new MTC device uses 3G cell data [instead of the now depricated 2G their original device used, and we installed as discussed below...] 

      However,  cell service providers are setting dates for ending 3G service... [e.g., Verizon will shut down 3G the end of 2019; AT&T in early 2022...] so it sounds like future cellular based hardware will need to support 4G at a minimum [and hopefully satellite and WiFi...]

      Rinse. Repeat. 

      In late 2020, Siren released their next model; The Siren 3 Proand it is quite future-proofed [4G international cell service, and world-wide satellite coverage is an option.]

      Their new Siren 3 Pro can also use wired or wireless sensors, and has what appears to be a much more elegant app and user interface for monitoring your vessel. 

      We have not upgraded to the new hardware yet because we live on our boat full time these days. Therefore our need for a replacement vessel monitoring system is not as urgent...

      Our original post [below] still applies with regards to how well we liked being able to monitor [and to some extent control] our vessel when away from it for brief or long periods of time. Therefore we are leaving it as written. Just be advised it discusses a now obsolete Siren model that used SMS messages for alerts [instead of the new app and web interfaces...] 

      What would we choose if we needed a vessel monitoring system today?

      We would give serious consideration to a Siren 3 Pro as a well supported, stand-alone unit and service— especially since we already have all the sensors we need with the original installation in 2014.  [These sensors are fully compatible with the new model...]

      IF we needed a new AIS transponder with integrated Marine VHF radio [we don't...]  we would analyse the Vesper Marine Cortex system which includes vessel monitoring capabilities along with the AIS and VHF capabilities.

      I just completed the initial installation of the Siren Marine remote vessel monitoring system mentioned in my Putting her to bed for the winter... post.  

      This device sends SMS messages to our cell phones [up to 4 phones or email addresses] based upon how we configure it (and we can make programming changes from our cell phones...) [The SIM card is international and is supposed to work in 160+ countries without us having to do anything except make sure our cell phones are working...]

      Of course, it is only useful when it [and your mobile phone] has a cell signal. 

      Using this device, we actively monitor: [24/7/365 when we have cell signals...]

      • Temperature inside the boat [Another probe can be added. e.g., for freezer, etc.]
      • Bilge pump cycles and duration
      • High water alarm (in bilge) [based upon sensor placement]
      • Intrusion detection 
        • We use motion detectors, but pressure mats, canvas snap switches, sliding hatch contacts, etc. are available. 
        • It can be a silent (SMS only) or local alarm siren
      • House battery bank voltage
        • we can set hi/lo notification thresholds
      • Shore power on or off [set to notify when it goes off; notifies again when on...]
      • Location
        • and it will notify us if the boat has moved, and track it if so
        • we set those parameters
      • Count down timer 
        • We connected to the engine oil pressure switch and set an alert at 100 hrs for oil change reminders
      • It also allows us to control 2 electrical circuits [AC or DC- via relay] remotely via cell phone
        • We separately control our deck lights and main cabin lights as we depart/approach the vessel. 
        • They shut off automatically after a user configurable period- currently 5 minutes.
      • Remote main battery bank switch
        • normally on
        • we can disconnect the main battery bank remotely
      This, not unlike various aides to navigation, will provide feedback that will help give us peace of mind and allow us contact the local person who will be watching the boat should anything need immediate attention...

      The unit is 3.xVDC  with an internal LIon battery. I ran it for 20 hours on the internal battery right out of the box before installing and connecting it to the boat's 12VDC battery bank. [Can also connect to 24 VDC] This test on internal battery included both GPS and cell. I made it report every hour, and requested many ad-hoc reports during this period as well. In a 20 hour period, the internal batt went from 100% to 39%.  

      It will run a long time on the boat's 900AH battery bank.

      Following are some actual reports as sent by the unit: (SMS to my cell phone- either on-demand or automatically based upon configurable reporting thresholds.)

      Here is the standard signal strength report:
      09:47 DENALI ROSE GETSIG: 311:370, GSM  SIGNAL:4 bars. SSI = 24, SSILMT = 5. GPS SIGNAL: FIX = 3 SAT = 11

      And a position report: (You can also activate a geofence to report change in location. e.g., Anchor dragging, theft, etc...)

      Standard INFO report: [We programed unit to send twice daily...]

      There are also motion sensors indicating when someone is onboard, a high water alert, etc. You get the idea.

      So far everything works as expected.


      The only minor anomaly so far is it does slightly under-report the ship's battery voltage (by about 0.15 to 0.2  volts) ["Ext batt volt" in INFO report, above] but as long as it is consistent I can live with that relative reading.

      I can say that Siren Marine is excellent to work with and consistently very responsive. They seem to be actively innovating, so it will be interesting to see what they come up with in the future.

      This unit has already paid for itself in the first month by literally saving our bacon (and other meat in the boat freezer...) [Remember we are away from the boat for the winter: 6-10 hours of airline commute time away (4 legs...) depending upon schedules.] 
      The morning of 11-Dec-2014 our remote vessel monitoring system (SirenMarine.com Sprite) sent an SMS to our cell phones notifying us that shore power to the boat was off. [Several times within a 3 hour period.]  
      (Murphy's Law mandates these things happen when you are away from the boat...)
      We immediately contacted our caretaker who confirmed that power was on in the marina, and upon investigating determined that the 50 amp AC connection to the boat had failed. [Here is my post detailing what happened...] 
      He was able to procure repair parts locally and replaced the faulty electrical fitting for us. [Thank you, Kim!]
      Since it would have been 5 days from the time of this event until his next in-vessel inspection, our being immediately notified prevented several adverse consequences including a flat [and possibly damaged] battery bank, and subsequent loss of 3 months worth of provisions [meat] in the Engle freezer.
      In addition, it helped us avoid the compounded risk of no bilge pumps [once the batteries went flat] not to mention the potential fire hazard of the live, arcing electrical inlet. 
      This situation could have escalated quickly if it weren't for the Siren Sprite [and our extremely reliable and capable caretaker...]
