Friday Funny 03-08/19 (Water, Solid or Liquid)

Punny

It's quasi spring time, days can be warm, days can be below freezing, you never know for sure what the weather will be next. This is the time of year to be extra cautious with ice on lakes and glaciers.

In the winter, Portage Glacier is a popular site for visiting and skiing, but at this time of year, it can become hazardous. Here is a video of the glacier calving, and sending waves under the lake ice. I wouldn't want to have risked standing on the unstable ice. Article, and video link here.

In our usual safety fashion, we don't get too close to the glacier face, and when in proximity, we keep a sharp lookout for bergs.

Sean is directing the skipper.

Before Denali Rose, we owned a trailerable sailboat,  Second Wind, a MacGregor 26M, and we cruised around Prince William Sound in her.

This glacier does actually come down to the water's edge, it's just so covered in silt and rock, that the color is black, instead of the beautiful blue we are used to seeing.

I'm sunning myself next to glaciers.

In Denali Rose, we've been to Le Conte Glacier a couple of times with guests. This fjord you have to really time going in/out with the correct tide, or risk being stuck, and crunched by bergs.

The fjord was dredged by the glacial movement, and it's too deep to anchor.

Seals sunning in ice floes.

We definitely don't want to get in between those bergs, and it's required to keep a distance from seal pups. We don't want to spook them into the water,  they use up too much of their energy to get back out, and some might not make it.

We're having a drought in the largest rainforest in the U.S. The harbormaster had to shut off the water in the marinas to help conserve. We have our watermaker onboard, so we're not hurting too bad, but maybe we need to tow one of those big bergs back to town, and put it in the reservoir to melt?

As always, we enjoy hearing from you, either here in comments or on our Facebook Denali Rose Sailboat page.
