Friday Funny 02-01/19

From the Facebook group, "My Home Is Alaska"

This cartoon represents a couple of issues, 1. the weather in the contiguous United States has in some instances, been far colder than Alaska lately, and 2. shipping rates to Alaska can be completely out of line, and outrageously expensive.

The comment about shipping struck a chord with Alaskans, and boosted the poster to hero status.

In some instances, an Amazon Prime membership is a way to eliminate the high shipping charges. If I find something online that I would like to order, my first effort is to see if Amazon has the item. Next I check to see if it can be shipped to Alaska, then, because Wrangell only has post office boxes, no home delivery, everyone goes to the PO to get their mail, I check to see if the seller will ship to a post office box. If they don't ship, the local PO has advised us to use their street address, and add the box number in somewhere. It works.

The bad news is that Amazon just started collecting sales tax on purchases. Apparently some federal law was changed, and now it's required. It's interesting that none of the Alaskan cities that have a city sales tax, knew that Amazon was going to do this, and surprise!
KTUU reports that cities across Alaska will be receiving sales tax, like Juneau, Bethel, and Sitka.

Wrangell also, we have a 7 percent tax here.

A popular weather meme:

It happens.
First it snows, then the temperatures warm up, it rains, and the roads become too icy for vehicles to be safe on the roads.

2/1

Crud, I must have jinxed myself by writing about how warm the weather is here. We don't see single digit, or temperatures below 20F very often in Wrangell, and that's what we're going to get. It's a good thing I have our diesel Espar heater going strong, and here at the dock, I can always turn on the electric heat as a backup.

It's batten down the hatches time, and pile on the fleece!

Gus, as usual, is enjoying his box next to the heater vent.

As always, we enjoy hearing from you, either here in comments or on our Facebook Denali Rose Sailboat page.
